The word "chiropractic" was derived from the Greek term cheir (hand) and praktikos (practical) which were combined to mean "done by hand".

The modern root of chiropractic began in Davenport, Iowa in 1895. Daniel David Palmer defined it as a science which concerns itself with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (primarily the nervous system). Palmer felt that restoring the normal structural/functional relationship would restore and preserve good health. Restore the spine and vertebral misalignments would restore the nervous systems ability to maintain health.

Chiropractic philosophy was first stated by Hippocrates, "The doctor of the future will treat the human frame, nervous system and rely on good nutrition, physical well being and posture to keep and maintain good health."

Chiropractic has taken a close look at the relationship between spinal misaligned vertebrae (subluxations) not only causing joint disfunction and spinal pain but also disrupting or over stimulating adjacent nerves causing pain and/or a disease condition. The scientific world understands that the nervous system, brain, spinal chord and nerves are the master controls or computer, if we may say, of the body. If impulses are blocked or changed abnormally the inherent ability of the brain to maintain health is interrupted. The term "pinched nerve" could be used loosely to understand such interruptions. In computer terms a virus, bug or worm diseases the systems ability to function properly.

Therefore, chiropractors do not necessarily see patients with only such things as musculoskeletal conditions as is arthritis (joint diseases), headache, whiplash (traumas), spinal curvatures, sciatica (pinched nerves), or back and neck pain but treat a condition that can be caused by disrupting nerves. This "worm, virus or pinched nerve" corrupts the normal electrical nerve messages is described in chiropractic terms as a vertbral subluxation.
